Orchids v Roses

The rose has inspired people for generations and its beauty has earned the rose a place in history as a symbol of love, with its delicate petals suggesting the caress of a loved one. It’s fair to say that the rose is a flower that has sparked the imagination and touched the  hearts of so many since time immemorial but times, it seems, are changing.

Perhaps because of their comparative rarity and innocent beauty, orchids seem to be the preferred flowers this year and their popularity is increasing, moth orchids,  dendrobium and phalaenopsis orchids which boast such pretty spring and summer colours are favourites.

Recent EU directives have restricted the range of colours which may be used in food preparation and, unlike some rose colours, the hues and tones of the orchid may be faithfully replicated in sugar.
